Exploring Rhu: Where innovation meets culinary passion
Nestled in the heart of Parnell in Auckland, bakery and wine bar Rhu has quickly established itself as a place where creativity, passion and a deep-seated love for culinary excellence blend into an unforgettable dining experience.
Rhu was founded by Le Cordon Bleu-trained chef Tushar Grover, whose previous New Zealand kitchen experience includes Huka Lodge, under the guidance of Paul Froggatt, and former Auckland restaurant Pasture – the popular fine dining institution that occupied the site on which Rhu now stands. Tushar is dedicated to providing his customers with beautifully-crafted, simple but impeccable dishes that are meticulously curated to highlight the best of local, in-season produce.
Rather than following food trends, Tushar believes in setting them, using his creativity and passion to constantly evolve the menu and dining experience at Rhu. From the creamy goats cheese French omelette, made with the freshest eggs, to the vibrant cos salad festooned with nasturtium and house-made croutons, every bite at Rhu tells a different chapter in this imaginative chef’s story.
Initially envisioned as an all-day eatery, Rhu has recently expanded its original 8am to 3pm horizons to include evening dining, catering to guests who want to enjoy the experience of fine dining, but with a simplicity and beauty that belies the inaccessibility of the fine dining traditions of yesteryear.
As he was taught himself, Tushar is paying it forward in his own eatery. The seasoned chef credits the former mentors and colleagues who helped guide and inspire him throughout his career for helping him perfect his craft. He has learned through personal experience about the importance of good leadership through example and collaboration within his team, and is passionate about creating a supportive environment that in turn fuels creativity and innovation in the kitchen.
Tushar is committed to providing everyone who walks through his doors, from staff to customers, with something inspiring and positive by the time they walk out again. To aspiring chefs and restaurateurs, Tushar offers sage advice based on his own journey: persevere through the challenges, trust your instincts, and surround yourself with a dedicated team who share your passion. As anyone in hospitality will know, building a successful venue from the ground up is a labour of love for Tushar and his team – but Rhu is a testament to what can be achieved with dedication, creativity and a total commitment to excellence.
As Rhu continues to carve its place in Auckland's culinary landscape, Tushar remains focused on building a path that is different and stands out from the rest. As a result, Rhu is more than just a restaurant; it is a manifestation of culinary passion and innovation. Through its commitment to quality, seasonality, and creativity, guests are taken on a journey of flavours and experiences that leave a lasting impression. As Parnell’s newest culinary gem, Rhu promises to delight and inspire, one dish at a time.
